Established in 2016, the Institute for Global and Area Studies, Pukyong National University was founded to perform comprehensive and interdisciplinary research and education from a global perspective on each nation across the world, individual regions, and global issues. Moreover, our institute is continually seeking the development and exchange strategies of the global gateway city Busan, where we are located in, by accentuating the specificity of a region-based institute.

Through the Trans-Pacific International Conference, our institute has performed scholarly exchange with countries near the Pacific rim and presented academic performance, such as “A Series of Global and Area Studies” and “A Series of Trans-Pacific Studies”, and is publishing the English journal, Journal of Global and Area Studies.

Our institute was selected for the 2020 “Humanities and Social Science Research Institute Support Project” based on the aforementioned outcomes and is now conducting the research project of the “Inquiring Peaceful Co-evolution of Multiple civilizations in the Trans-Pacific as a Mega-region: Incorporating Regions, Contesting Nations, Embracing Cities”. Going forward, our institute intends to play the role of a world-class hub for the traverse, linkage, comparative studies of multiple regions in the trans-pacific area and continuously overcome the limitations of previous individual regional research from a trans-pacific viewpoint. Furthermore, we aim to pioneer a new paradigm of regional research by combining trans-ethnic and trans-national phenomena and global issues, which are triggered by globalization, with regional studies around overseas maritime cities.
