The European Commission and EU ministers presented and approved a plan to cut gas consumption over the coming months to weather what is likely to be a very challenging winter energy-wise. Accordingly, different countries have unveiled their plan to cut gas consumption. For examples, Spain has unveiled a plan to moderate aircon, heating and lighting in public spaces as part of an EU-wide effort to limit Russian gas imports. Heating will be kept to a maximum of 19 degrees in the winter and a minimum of 27 degrees in the summer. Spain’s government announced it would ban certain venues from setting air conditioning below 27°C in the summer. The rules will be mandatory in all public and commercial buildings, including bars, cinemas, theatres, airports and train stations. It is extended as a recommendation to Spanish households. The government passed the bill as part of a bid to reduce Spain’s gas consumption by 7% in line with recent EU agreements to limit dependency on Russian gas, but some are concerned it will impact the most vulnerable families. France on his side announced it is forcing shops to keep their doors closed if they have their aircon on and switch off illuminated advertising overnight. More details can be found on attached links.
